Well, the host school was New Stanley Elementary and the teacher there, Gloria, has an Apple TV just like I do. Apple TV is great and gives you so many cool opportunities for mirroring, integrating videos, streaming and more (check back later this year for blog posts about how to use the Apple TV in your music classroom). Apple TV for education is great, but Apple TV wasn't made ONLY for education. That's why the main menu has app icons for things like HBO, ESPN, Disney, and the main screen shows previews of movies and recent TV additions. I'm sure you can imagine how that those images can be distracting for students. I turned to Gloria and asked, "Did you know you can turn off those icons? I've done it! It's awesome"
Grab your Apple TV Remote and hit MENU.
From the Main Menu select "Settings" with the little cog icon.
Click "Restrictions" (You might need to know or set up a password here)
Then click on the icon that you don't want and hit enter to change it from "Show" (which is the preset) to "Hide" and viola! It's gone. The process for shutting off movie poster previews was almost exactly the same. It's not listed under the icons but is in the same menu. Basically, shut off everything in this drop down menu EXCEPT music and you're good.
I checked the Apple website just now and with a slightly new operating system the process is just a little different. If the process above doesn't work, click THIS LINK to see what Apple has to say. Mostly it's the same. Just a little change. I think the only change is that you go to "Settings>Main Menu" and the menu should be there.
I LOVE my Apple TV and love how it integrates with so many other things I have at school. It just seems to make life easier and more seamless. *Sigh* But, I'm a Mac boy at heart, so of course I love the Apple TV at school. More to come on Apple TV and how I use it later this year!
